In a proactive move to combat the ongoing cholera outbreak, four Zambian government ministers, led by Health Minister Sylvia Masebo, received the cholera vaccine in Lusaka. The World Health Organization (WHO) contributed 1.7 million doses to support vaccination efforts.
Since October, nearly 400 people have lost their lives to the disease, prompting intensified measures to curb its spread. During the vaccination campaign launch, Minister Masebo emphasized the importance of redirecting individuals with cholera symptoms to hospitals instead of treating them at home.
The focus is on administering the vaccine in cholera hotspots within Lusaka, where an estimated three million people reside. The health minister reported 23 recent deaths in Lusaka, primarily affecting children under five and elderly individuals.
