The shortage of pediatric dialysis machines and essential medical supplies has resulted in a heartbreaking loss of 15 children at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. The unavailability of these critical resources has compelled healthcare professionals to make do with adult machines, putting the lives of vulnerable patients in grave danger.
In an interview, Adam Yahaya Wanzam, the Nurse Manager of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Dialysis Unit, issued a heartfelt plea for assistance. He urgently called upon the government, individuals, and non-governmental organizations to step forward and provide the life-saving equipment and supplies that are desperately needed.
“We have lost over 10 to 15 children who were supposed to receive dialysis,” Wanzam lamented. “But due to a lack of pediatric machines, we were improvising with the adult machines, which are not suitable for children.”
Wanzam emphasized the devastating consequences of this shortage, affecting not only the children who have tragically lost their lives but also their families who must endure unimaginable pain.
“We are reaching out to individuals and non-governmental organizations to come to our aid by helping us acquire these pediatric machines and consumables. This way, when an innocent child faces this situation, the Tamale Teaching Hospital Dialysis unit can step in and save them.”
