The Nigerian Supreme Court has postponed a legal challenge to the government’s policy of scrapping old banknotes, which has resulted in a severe cash shortage.

More states have joined the case, including Lagos and Katsina. The case will now be heard on February 22, just three days before the general election.

The Supreme Court suspended a deadline of February 10 for the return of old notes last week.

But Nigeria’s central bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, has added to the confusion by insisting that the old notes are no longer legal tender. He stated that the situation had significantly improved.
