Tragic reports reveal that approximately 225 individuals, including children, have succumbed to starvation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region since last July. The devastating impact of drought and the lingering scars of a two-year civil war have led to a dire humanitarian situation.
Health officials, cited by regional TV, disclosed that the majority of these heart-wrenching deaths—209, to be precise—have occurred in the rural area of Edga Arbi. In another region, 16 individuals who were displaced by the brutal civil war that concluded in 2022 have lost their lives due to hunger.
Warnings from Tigray officials about the potential onset of a famine reminiscent of Ethiopia’s tragic events in the mid-80s, which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands, are hauntingly echoed by these distressing developments.
Despite these alarming circumstances, the federal government disputes the imminent threat of famine and asserts ongoing efforts to provide aid. The United Nations reports that over 20 million people across Ethiopia are in dire need of food assistance due to a combination of conflicts, drought, and flooding.
