In response to a surge in criminal activities, including recent cases of murder in residential apartments, Kenya’s private security regulator has issued new directives for accommodation and hospitality providers. The Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA) CEO, Fazul Mahamed, announced on Monday that all guests must have their identification documents held by providers until check-out.
The recent brutal murders of two young women in short-term accommodation rentals have sparked shock and anger among Kenyans, prompting calls for stricter regulations. The PSRA has mandated security guards to document guests’ identification details along with their check-in and check-out times. Additionally, providers must maintain logs of vehicles accessing their premises, and security cameras must be operational at all times.
These measures aim to enhance the safety of both residents and guests, addressing concerns about the rising criminal incidents within residential spaces, particularly those associated with online accommodation, lodging, and hospitality platforms.
