Samuel Atta Akyea, Chairman of the Energy Committee of Parliament, revealed that President Akufo-Addo has instructed the Volta River Authority to reduce electricity exports to neighbouring nations amidst the ongoing intermittent power outages, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor’.
In an interview on JoyNews in Accra, the Abuakwa South Member of Parliament emphasized the President’s prioritization of domestic energy needs over potential profits from exporting electricity.
“The President recognizes our national requirements over foreign gains,” he remarked.
“We can’t afford to prioritize foreign profits while our national economy suffers. Hence, we will limit electricity exports and divert the supply to our national grid to ensure continuous power,” he explained to host Evans Mensah.
Ghana has been experiencing inconsistent electricity supply lately, causing disruptions across various sectors and inconveniences for consumers.
As Ghana exports power to neighbouring countries like Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso, the decision to reduce electricity exports aims to alleviate the impact of the power crisis on the nation’s economy and its people.
Atta Akyea highlighted the President’s dedication to resolving the current instability in the country’s power supply.
