South African officials have stated that they are continuing to monitor communities that have been flooded as a result of weeks of heavy rains.

The rains were caused by the global La Nia weather phenomenon that occurs in the Pacific Ocean.

Over the weekend, officials in Gauteng province opened several floodgates to relieve pressure on the Vaal Dam, one of the province’s largest.

This entailed purposefully flooding some properties near the dam.

Officials have stated that this is to prevent the massive dam from collapsing and putting thousands of people in danger.

People living near the Vaal River have also been advised to consider moving to higher ground until the water recedes.
