A 34-year-old assemblyman, popularly known as Teacher Obour, met a tragic end during his campaign for re-election. Teacher Obour, also known as Manasseh Addison Sackey, was a dedicated teacher at Teberebie M/A Junior High School and sought re-election in the Teberebie electoral area in Prestea, Western Region.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday, December 4, when Teacher Obour, along with five other passengers, was ferried across a river connecting Aklika. This river crossing was part of his electoral area. Regrettably, a boat capsized during the journey, leading to Teacher Obour’s drowning.
It’s noteworthy that four years prior, Teacher Obour’s predecessor, a former assemblyman, had faced a similar tragic fate just two weeks before the elections.
According to reports from Citinewsroom.com, Teacher Obour’s campaign team had urged him not to go on the fateful day, citing concerns for his safety. However, he insisted it was a short distance and that he would return immediately. Unfortunately, the canoe capsized in the middle of the river, and three others who were on board managed to report that Teacher Obour and another gentleman had drowned.
Nana Esi Brew Monney, a journalist with Prestea FM, shared the account, stating, “His campaign crew told him not to go, but he insisted it was just a stone’s throw, and he could return immediately. He was wearing Wellington boots with five others on board. Just in the middle of the river, the canoe capsized. Three others came back to report that Manasseh and the other gentleman had drowned. A search team was sent, only for them to find the lifeless body of Manasseh Addison Sackey. This happened around 2:00 pm, and the body was found around 6:00 pm.”
The chief of the area and the municipal chief executive have yet to provide official statements, while Manasseh’s family is still to be informed about his tragic demise. His body has been deposited at the Tarkwa municipal mortuary.
