On Friday morning, a passenger bus collided with a stationary lorry on Uganda’s highway connecting the capital, Kampala, to the northern town of Gulu, killing at least 16 people.

According to police, 12 people died on the scene, while four others died later at a hospital. Several other passengers on the bus were hurt.

The lorry was said to be parked and loading cargo about a kilometer from Kamdini Corner, a popular rest stop and checkpoint in the country’s north. The country has seen alarming levels of road carnage in recent weeks, particularly during the holiday season.

A traffic police report released earlier this week revealed that 104 road accidents occurred between December 30 and January 1.

In these road accidents alone, at least 35 people were killed. Road accidents have long been a source of concern in the country. In 2021, traffic police in Uganda recorded over 4,000 crashes, many of which were fatal.
