Rather than creating a new body dedicated to the technology, Britain intends to divide responsibility for governing artificial intelligence (AI) among its regulators for human rights, health and safety, and competition.

AI, which is rapidly evolving with advances like the ChatGPT app, has the potential to improve productivity and unlock growth, but the government is concerned about the risks it may pose to people’s privacy, human rights, or safety.

It stated that it would avoid heavy-handed legislation that could stifle innovation in favor of a more adaptable approach to regulation based on broad principles such as safety, transparency, fairness, and accountability.

The European Union is addressing the issue head-on by attempting to draft landmark AI legislation and establish a new AI office. According to sources, the rate at which technology is advancing is complicating their efforts.

Britain stated in a policy paper released on Wednesday that its approach would allow it to adapt its rules as technology advanced.

It stated that existing regulators would issue practical guidance to organizations, as well as other tools and resources such as risk assessment templates, over the next 12 months.

It stated that legislation could be introduced later to ensure that regulators applied the principles consistently.
