Christian Atsu, a Black Stars player from Ghana, was rescued alive from the rubble of a major earthquake that killed over 3,000 people in Turkey, where he plays club football and neighboring Syria.

He is said to have suffered injuries to his right foot and to be having breathing problems.

Before the collapse, he was reportedly on the ninth floor of the building with teammates and club officials.

Taner Savut, Hatayspor’s sporting director, brought Atsu, 31, to the club in September.

Dozens of countries have pledged aid since the 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck earlier on Monday while people were still sleeping and in the midst of freezing weather, which has hampered emergency efforts.

Among the 5,606 structures reduced to rubble in Turkey were multi-story apartment buildings full of residents, while Syria reported dozens of collapses as well as damage to archaeological sites in Aleppo.
