David Coote, a Premier League referee, has been dismissed from his position by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following an investigation into his conduct.

Coote, 42, was suspended by PGMOL on November 11, 2024, as the organization began a thorough inquiry into allegations concerning his behavior. The suspension came after a video surfaced on social media, reportedly showing Coote making offensive comments about Liverpool FC and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp. The video raised concerns about his ability to officiate at the highest level.

The controversy deepened two days later when The Sun published photos allegedly showing Coote engaging in suspicious behavior during this summer’s European Championship. The images seemed to show him inhaling a white powder through a rolled-up US dollar bill, prompting further questions about his professionalism and personal conduct.

After a full investigation, PGMOL concluded that Coote’s actions had made his position “untenable,” noting that his behavior violated the terms of his employment contract. Despite the dismissal, the organization expressed ongoing support for Coote, emphasizing their commitment to his well-being.

Coote has been informed of his right to appeal the decision, giving him the option to challenge the findings and the outcome of the investigation.
