British promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that Anthony Joshua will not be returning to the ring until at least May 2025, effectively putting any chance of a rematch with IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois on hold. This news comes after a tough defeat for Joshua, who was knocked down four times by Dubois in their September bout at Wembley before losing by knockout in the fifth round.

Though rumors had circulated about a potential rematch scheduled for February 22, Hearn explained that the timeline was simply too soon for Joshua’s recovery. “We had an honest discussion,” Hearn told Boxing News. “Joshua wanted to fight in February, but after assessing his condition, we advised that it wouldn’t be possible to start training camp and be ready to compete at 100% by that date.”

While Joshua has some minor physical concerns, Hearn reassured that there were no serious injuries. “A few small issues cropped up during training and after the fight, but nothing significant,” he said. “We recommended pushing for a May or June return, although initially, Joshua was hesitant. However, it’s essential that we focus on his full recovery to ensure he’s in top form.”

Hearn also acknowledged that a loss to Dubois in a potential rematch could have serious implications for Joshua’s boxing future. “If Joshua were to lose again, we’d have to seriously assess his career,” he said. “But our goal is to make sure he returns ready—mentally and physically—for a strong comeback.”

Joshua’s current condition is stable, according to Hearn, who noted that the minor issues he is dealing with are typical for heavyweights in training. “There are no major injuries, just the usual wear and tear that comes with intense training,” Hearn explained. “It’s nothing that should affect him long-term.”

As Joshua focuses on his recovery, there remains talk of a potential super fight with Tyson Fury, who is set to face Oleksandr Usyk on December 21, following his earlier loss to the unified champion. Fans continue to speculate about the much-anticipated showdown between the two British heavyweights, with many hoping for a future clash after both men return to the ring in 2025.
