Egypt has parted ways with Portuguese manager Rui Vitoria following their disappointing performance in the Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Ivory Coast.
The Pharaohs bowed out of the tournament in the last-16 stage after a heart-wrenching 8-7 penalty shootout loss against DR Congo in San Pedro.
Struggling throughout the tournament, Egypt failed to secure a single victory and faced setbacks early on due to an injury to their star captain, Mohamed Salah.
Their group-stage matches ended in three consecutive 2-2 draws against Mozambique, Ghana, and Cape Verde before their eventual defeat to DR Congo.
In an announcement on Sunday, the Egypt Football Association (EFA) disclosed the dismissal of 53-year-old Vitoria and his entire coaching staff following a meeting of their board of directors.
Mohamed Youssef, a former Al Ahly coach, has been appointed as Egypt’s interim manager, with the EFA considering applications from foreign coaches.
Vitoria took charge of Egypt in 2022, succeeding Ehab Galal, under a four-year contract extending to the 2026 World Cup.
Despite a promising start, securing 12 wins out of 14 matches prior to Afcon 2023, including victories in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, Vitoria’s tenure ended on a disappointing note.
His dismissal adds to the list of coaching changes witnessed during Afcon 2023, including departures from Algeria, Gambia, Ghana, Tunisia, Tanzania, and Ivory Coast.
