Residents of the southern town of Wolkite told the BBC that Ethiopian security forces killed at least three people when they opened fire on people protesting a water shortage.

They added that five more people were injured during the protests on Wednesday.

Residents were outraged by the town’s worsening water shortage and staged a protest in front of the city’s water management office.

“We have waited a long time to hold protests. We came out today hoping for [solutions]. However, things have devolved into guns and blood,” a resident told the BBC.
