Expert says that maintaining a routine is crucial even though there’s no favorable time to do so.
Professor Li-Huei Tsai, a neuroscientist at MIT, has stated that if people want to keep their brains healthy and their memories functioning properly, they must practice a certain healthy discipline to slow the decline of their mental abilities.
Professor Tsai is the director of the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and specializes in mental health diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
She stated to Insider that people are aware of what they should do to maintain their mental health and that there is no hidden secret from anyone.
“People are more aware of it now,” Tsai said.
She advised people to stay socially and intellectually active, to exercise, and to eat healthily. She did, however, mention that the most difficult part is staying consistent with that routine.
According to a recent study published in the BMJ, those who maintain a nutritious diet and live a healthy lifestyle have slower memory decline relative to their age than those who do not.
The following factors were examined by the study’s researchers: healthy diet, abstinence from smoking and alcohol, socialization, daily workout, and mindful activities.
Professor Tsai is currently working on developing a medical device that could slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
She stated that maintaining the routine is critical even when there is no convenient time to do so.
“I just need to be more disciplined,” Tsai said.
“Exercise in the winter, for example, is extremely painful when the outside temperature is below zero and there is ice and snow on the ground. I just try to be disciplined “She went on to say.
