Thabo Bester, a convicted South African murderer, and rapist, and his girlfriend will not face charges for illegally entering Tanzania, according to police.
Bester and his celebrity girlfriend, Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, were apprehended in the East African country last Friday following their daring escape from South Africa.
According to Tanzanian police spokesperson David Misime, the couple will be handed over to South African authorities for extradition.
“We are finalizing some legal proceedings between the two countries, and we will hand him over to South African officials,” he said, adding that the pair is currently being held in Arusha, Tanzania’s northern city.
Bester, dubbed the “Facebook rapist” because he used the social networking site to lure his victims, was convicted in 2012 of raping and killing his then-girlfriend, model Nomfundo Tyhulu. He had been convicted of raping and robbing two other women a year before.
He escaped from jail last May by faking his own death in a fire and planting a corpse in his cell, but this was only recently discovered.
