Fifa President Gianni Infantino unveiled Kigali Pele Stadium on Wednesday in memory of the Brazilian football legend who died in December of last year.
The multi-sports stadium, formerly known as Kigali Regional Stadium, has a capacity of 22,000 people.
President Paul Kagame presided over the stadium’s inauguration, which took place on the sidelines of the 73rd Fifa Congress in Kigali.
According to The News-Times, President Kagame thanked Mr. Infantino for giving the country the opportunity to honor Mr. Pele by naming the stadium after him.
Mr. Infantino stated that the transfer was the best way to preserve Mr. Pele’s football memories.
“Pele has left us, but he is always with us,” said Mr. Infantino.
