The first group of 376 Nigerians fleeing the Sudanese crisis arrived in Abuja on Wednesday, after being stranded at the Egyptian border for days due to visa issues.
The evacuees were airlifted from Aswan in neighboring Egypt in two planes: the Nigerian commercial carrier Air Peace and a military plane.
The foreign ministry and emergency services greeted the visibly happy returnees.
Sadiya Farouk, the minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management, announced that each returnee would receive $200 (£196) to help them settle back in.
Nigeria had sent 40 luxury buses to Egypt to transport evacuees to the West African country.
According to reports, Sudan has blocked the passage of 20 buses carrying hundreds more Nigerians. More than 5,000 Nigerians are thought to be living in Sudan, many of whom are students.
At least 550 people have been killed in Sudan, tens of thousands have been displaced, and an exodus of foreigners and international staff has occurred.
