The Sierra Leone Electoral Commission (ECSL) has cleared presidential opposition candidate Samura Kamara to run in the June election.
Mr. Kamara, who was defeated in the 2018 election by Julius Maada Bio, has been on trial for alleged corruption since February.
He was charged in December 2021 with misappropriating more than $2.5 million (£1.9 million) in public funds while serving as foreign affairs minister.
After his case was adjourned until July, the electoral commission cleared him.
Mr. Kamara’s All People’s Congress (APC) is seen as President Bio’s main rival.
The incumbent’s candidacy for a second term has also been approved. Mr. Bio is running for re-election after a first term marred by economic hardship and rampant inflation.
Frustration over financial difficulties sparked protests last August, killing six police officers and 27 civilians.
In June, voters will also choose members of parliament, mayors, and local councilors.
