According to Turkish journalist Yaz Sabuncuolu, Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu spent 26 hours trapped under the debris from the terrible earthquakes that struck Turkey and neighboring Syria on February 6.

He said Atsu’s condition had improved since early Monday, when the former Newcastle winger was said to be stuck beneath earthquake debris in Hatay, Turkey, which shares a border with Syria.

“He was under the rubble for 26 hours…Rescue teams are going to Hatay right now from a lot of cities and still, Hatay is waiting for health and rescue teams more and more because more than one million people have been affected by this earthquake” he said.

Yaz Sabuncuolu confirmed Atsu’s rescue and hospitalization earlier today. Atsu had spent a full day and two hours under the rubble before being discovered.
After spending eight years in the English Premier League with Bournemouth and Everton, the 31-year-old Atsu joined Hatayspor. At the 2015 African Cup of Nations and the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he shone for Ghana’s Black Stars.
