Gabon’s presidential terms will now be five years long, President Ali Bongo announced on Monday. Presidents have traditionally served seven-year terms, while senators have served six-year terms.

However, Mr. Bongo, who has led the country since his father’s death in 2009, has made no statements regarding a new term limit for presidents.

According to RFI, presidents, legislators, and senators can run for office as many times as they want.

President Bongo’s announcement came during talks called by the government and opposition to discuss election issues ahead of elections later this year.
