Following a year-long search, the global vaccine alliance (Gavi) has named a former Nigerian health minister as its new CEO.
“In a field of world-class candidates,” Muhammad Ali Pate “stood out,” according to Gavi board chairman José Manuel Barroso.

Dr. Pate said he was “deeply honored” to be chosen. He will start in August, leaving his position as a professor of public health leadership at Harvard University in the United States.
During the pandemic, Gavi was chastised for denying the world’s poorest people access to vaccines.
Along with the World Health Organization and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, it co-leads the Covax coronavirus vaccine initiative.
