More than 450 rebels have been tried in Chad in connection with the death of President Idriss Déby. In April 2021, he was killed while fighting a rebel offensive launched from Libya.
The hearing is taking place inside a prison that houses nearly 400 of the accused.

They are believed to be all members of Chad’s rebel Front for Change and Consensus and have been charged with terrorism and threatening state security.
The court was adjourned until Wednesday following the reading of the charges.
