Ghanaian journalists have initiated a media blackout on Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson following an alleged physical assault on a reporter by individuals purportedly affiliated with her.
The minister, who also serves as an MP for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), refuted any connection to the incident, dismissing the allegations against her as politically motivated.
The journalist, employed at a local radio station, was reportedly assaulted earlier this month during an NPP parliamentary vetting session in the Central Region. According to Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the assailants donned T-shirts bearing Ms. Koomson’s name, prompting the call for a media blackout on the minister’s activities.
In response, the NPP denounced the media directive as unjust, asserting that none of the MP’s team members were involved in the assault. The party urged the GJA to conduct a thorough investigation before making any judgments.
