According to the transport minister, an enormous plume of dust from the Sahara desert threatens to sweep through half of Cameroon. If the forecast wind conditions hold, dust could cause road accidents due to reduced visibility, according to Ernest Ngalle Bibehe in a press release.

Mr. Bibehe added that the dust could also cause respiratory diseases.

The dust plume is currently crossing Cameroon’s Far North region and is expected to spread to four other regions in the coming days. The minister has urged people to drive cautiously and to wear appropriate eye and nose protection.

Every year, dust storms from the Sahara sweep across Cameroon from north to south.
