The House of Representatives has made a significant move to tackle the growing security issues in Abuja by summoning key officials, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, and Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Ajayi. These officials have been called to appear before the House committees on FCT, Police Affairs, and National Security and Intelligence.
This decision followed a motion of urgent public importance presented during Tuesday’s plenary session by Ismail Dabo, a lawmaker from Bauchi state. The motion raised alarm over the increasing number of abductions and violent crimes in both the suburbs and the city center of Abuja, which recently led to the tragic death of Dabo’s aide, Nimah Sulaiman. Sulaiman was kidnapped and killed at gunpoint by ‘one chance’ operators near Bannex junction in Wuse 2, despite a ransom being paid for her release.
The incident has sparked greater concern about the safety of Abuja’s residents, prompting immediate calls for government action. Dabo passionately addressed the House, pointing out the rising danger posed by unregistered and unpainted taxis, which are often used in criminal activities. He emphasized the fear residents now live with and urged lawmakers to take responsibility in ensuring the security of citizens.
After a voice vote led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the motion was unanimously adopted, signaling a clear demand for swift action to improve the safety of the FCT.
