A candidate in Nigeria’s presidential election must receive the most votes and 25% of the votes cast in 25 of the 36 states plus Abuja in order to be declared the victor.
By doing this, it will be made sure that the new president has widespread support.

With over 200 million people, Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa.
There are 18 candidates running for office, but Bola Tinubu of the ruling party, Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition, and Peter Obi of the small Labour Party are the front-runners.
Each state is reporting provisional results, but only Mahmood Yakubu, the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec), can certify them as official.
