Tensions Rise Between Akpabio and Natasha Over Harassment Allegations

A heated dispute has erupted between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, following a dramatic clash in the Senate chamber. The disagreement, initially sparked by a debate over seating arrangements, has escalated into serious allegations of misconduct.

The Senate Showdown

During a recent session, Akpoti-Uduaghan voiced strong objections over seating assignments, leading to a tense exchange with Akpabio. Her protest briefly disrupted proceedings, prompting the Senate President to order her removal and refer the matter to the Ethics Committee for disciplinary review.

Shortly after, Akpoti-Uduaghan went public with explosive claims, accusing Akpabio of repeatedly making unwanted advances toward her. She alleged that her refusal to entertain him resulted in the treatment she has received in the Senate.

In response, she filed a formal complaint, but the Senate Ethics Committee dismissed it, citing procedural shortcomings.

Suspension and Senate Response

Following a review of the incident, the Senate imposed a six-month suspension on Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing her conduct during the session as a violation of parliamentary decorum. The Ethics Committee further advised that she submit a written apology to the Senate if she wishes for the suspension to be reconsidered.

Akpabio’s Take on the Allegations

While addressing the chamber, Akpabio used the opportunity to push back against the accusations. He emphasized his long-standing friendship with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s husband, Emmanuel Uduaghan, as evidence that the allegations held no merit.

Recalling his presence at the couple’s wedding in Kogi State, he shared details of the challenges he faced that night.

“I considered her husband a good friend. I even attended their wedding and ended up spending the night at the Dangote Cement factory because the airport lights in Kogi weren’t operational,” Akpabio stated.

What’s Next?

With the suspension in place and tensions still high, the controversy surrounding the allegations remains a hot topic. Whether Akpoti-Uduaghan will issue an apology or challenge the decision further is yet to be seen.
