Simon Osei-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, stands firm on his decision regarding the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and refuses to issue an apology.

He clarified his stance, explaining that the arrest of Mark Wiafe Asomani, the Ashanti East Manager of ECG, was prompted by security concerns.

During a press briefing in Kumasi, the Minister disclosed existing agreements between ECG and Kumasi Technical University aimed at resolving the University’s outstanding debts.

Osei-Mensah emphasized that his actions were within the scope of his responsibilities and did not constitute any wrongdoing.

“I see no need to apologize for fulfilling my security duties. I instructed the police to invite Ing Mark Asomani Wiafe based on security grounds, considering the electricity sector’s dynamics in the region. Despite assertions that ECG is not under my jurisdiction, I remain obligated to execute my security responsibilities as stipulated in the Securities and Intelligence Act of 2020, Act 10(30).”

Additionally, the Minister refuted allegations suggesting that certain ECG managers are part of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
