Ibrahim Lamorde, the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has passed away at the age of 61. He died in Egypt on Sunday while receiving treatment for a kidney stone.

His funeral rites are set for today, Tuesday, May 29, in Abuja. The announcement was made by Isa Pantami, the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, on social media. Pantami wrote, “The Jana’iza prayer of our late father, brother, and Uncle DIG Ibrahim LAMORDE mni and Former Chairman of EFCC is coming up Tuesday 28/05/2024 at the National Mosque Abuja by 1:30 pm in sha Allah, immediately after Zuhr!”

Born on December 20, 1962, Lamorde had a distinguished career in law enforcement. He joined the Nigerian Police Force in 1986 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, Kaduna State, in 1984. He rose through the ranks, eventually retiring as a Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2021.

Lamorde is best known for his tenure as EFCC chairman from 2011 to 2015, where he led numerous high-profile anti-corruption investigations. His leadership in the fight against corruption made a significant impact on Nigeria’s efforts to tackle financial crimes.

His funeral is expected to draw a diverse group of attendees, including law enforcement officials, politicians, and members of civil society, reflecting the broad influence of his professional legacy.
