Safaricom, the largest telecom company in East and Central Africa, has activated 5G services in five Kenyan cities, including Nairobi, the country’s capital.

Data speeds that are 10 times quicker than those of a 4G connection may be available to those who can afford it, albeit the costs are expensive. For instance, if the circumstances are ideal, a whole movie may be downloaded in 10 seconds.

The country’s digital economy, including e-commerce and the ICT sector as a whole, which is seeing rapid expansion, is anticipated to benefit from the opening up of 5G.

However, for the time being, clients must either spend money on a 5G-ready handset or a 5G router, which costs about $250 (£210). The cost of data is likewise higher for both solutions.

Among the African nations that have already implemented 5G are South Africa, Nigeria, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. However, according to research by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association, 4G adoption is still low in Africa, where it only accounts for roughly 25% of all connections, compared to a 60% global average.
