A group of university students and other individuals who were kidnapped in northern Nigeria have been rescued, according to authorities.
Late on Thursday night, gunmen attacked the Confluence University of Science and Technology in Kogi state, abducting nine students.
The victims were rescued following a confrontation between local hunters, security forces, and the kidnappers, resulting in a shootout, stated Kogi’s information commissioner, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, on the social media platform X.
Fanwo also mentioned that the rescued individuals have been transported to the hospital for medical attention.
“Security agents are currently conducting thorough searches of the forests to ensure the safe return of all the kidnapped students,” he added.
Nigeria has seen an increase in kidnapping incidents by criminal gangs, commonly referred to as bandits, particularly in the northwest region of the country.
While many of the abducted individuals have been released, some were only freed after ransom payments were made.
