According to local media, two football players were killed after being struck by lightning while playing in Kisii county in western Kenya.

Two other players were taken to the hospital for emergency treatment following injuries sustained during the weekend tournament.

According to a football federation official, the teams were playing a friendly match when it began to rain.

“It is quite unfortunate that they lost their lives while playing a game that they loved most. “As federation officials, we send our condolences to the affected families,” said Evans Akang’a, chairman of the Football Kenya Federation, according to the Daily Nation.

In order to reduce such incidents, the official urged authorities to install lightning arrestors in public areas, including schools where matches are held.
