Manchester United has officially announced Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, praising him as “one of Europe’s brightest and most promising coaches.” The 39-year-old arrives from Sporting Lisbon, stepping in after Erik ten Hag was released from his duties following a challenging season start, with United securing only four wins across all competitions.
Amorim has led Sporting Lisbon through an impressive, unbeaten league run this season, and his successful leadership, highlighted by a league title last year, made him United’s top choice. To bring him on board, the club paid Sporting an £8.3 million release clause. A United delegation traveled to Lisbon earlier in the week to finalize the deal, setting Amorim’s start date at Old Trafford for November 11.
In a club statement, United expressed their excitement: “Manchester United is thrilled to announce Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, pending work visa approval. He will serve until June 2027, with an option to extend for an additional year, after fulfilling his commitments with Sporting. Ruben will officially begin on November 11.”
United continued, “Ruben is among the most talented young coaches in European football. He brings a wealth of experience as both a player and coach, including two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting CP, ending the club’s 19-year wait for a league title. Ruud van Nistelrooy will oversee the team until Ruben’s arrival.”
