Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has evacuated its staff from the main hospital in Sudan’s Gezira state due to escalating insecurity.

Madani Teaching Hospital in Wad Madani, the sole operational hospital in Gezira, has witnessed worsening security conditions.

Wad Madani is under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, engaged in conflict with Sudan’s army since April 2023.

In a statement, MSF explained the challenging decision, citing relentless obstacles over three months, including heightened insecurity and restrictions on bringing in new staff and medical supplies due to travel permit denials.

The hospital has been a lifeline for “hundreds of thousands of people in dire need of medical assistance,” MSF emphasized.

The charity called on the army and RSF to cease targeting health facilities, ensure the safety of medical personnel, and facilitate the necessary travel permits for staff and supplies.
