The Senate and House of Representatives have announced an early return from their break, now scheduled for Thursday, June 27, instead of the previously planned July 2. This decision comes due to pressing national matters requiring immediate attention.
Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, and Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Clerk of the House of Representatives, confirmed the change. According to Adaramodu, the lawmakers will focus on appropriation issues, constitutional and electoral matters, as well as clearing outstanding bills and motions before their annual recess.
Adaramodu stated, “We decided to resume earlier from the Sallah break to address significant national and constitutional issues. By doing so, we gain an extra legislative day to deal with these important matters.”
Dr. Danzaria, in an internal memo dated June 24, 2024, titled “Change in Resumption Date from Recess,” urged House members to adjust their schedules accordingly. “The resumption date has been moved to Thursday, June 27, 2024, with plenary commencing at 11:00 am,” the memo read. “Please ensure your timely presence for the resumption of legislative activities.”
One of the key items on the agenda is the 2024 Supplementary Appropriation Bill, which President Bola Tinubu is expected to present to the National Assembly on Thursday.
