President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the upgrade of Ibadan Airport, as announced by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Wednesday.

Governor Makinde shared that his administration’s persistent efforts to elevate Ibadan Airport in Alakia to international standards have paid off, with construction set to begin in the next three weeks. This announcement came during a meeting with Air Marshal Hassan Baba Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff, at the Governor’s Office in Agodi, Ibadan.

The governor outlined that the project will include building a new terminal and runway, among other enhancements, and will be executed by professionals to meet high standards.

Governor Makinde emphasized that the airport upgrade is a crucial part of his administration’s strategy to boost the state’s economy, which has been a focus over the past five years. He also highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure, such as the 110-kilometer Ibadan Circular Road, which aligns with the state’s economic expansion goals. Additionally, the administration is considering providing land for the Air Force’s post-retirement housing scheme along the Circular Road corridor.

“We’ve been in discussions with the Presidency and received approval this week for the Ibadan Airport upgrade,” Makinde announced. “I’ll be heading to Abuja soon to finalize the paperwork. Construction will begin within three weeks, expanding the runway and building a new terminal.”

Since taking office, Makinde’s administration has prioritized education, agriculture, health, and economic growth. He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Air Staff for the Air Force’s collaboration with local security agencies to maintain safety in Oyo State, urging that this partnership continue.

The governor noted the Air Force’s significant role in maintaining internal security through collaboration with Operation Burst. He also reaffirmed his commitment to completing the road leading to the Air Force Base in Ajia, Ibadan, and improving several surrounding roads to facilitate easy movement of personnel and equipment.

Air Marshal Abubakar praised Governor Makinde as a visionary leader and thanked him for his support of the Air Force. He acknowledged the governor’s dedication to economic development and security, noting the acquisition of 60 hectares for the Air Force Base and the provision of operational vehicles as commendable efforts.

Abubakar urged the governor to expedite the ongoing work on the 10km Ajia-Airport Road to enhance the Air Force’s operational efficiency, assuring that the Force will continue to support the state and strengthen their mutual relationship.
