Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, says Peter Obi is welcome to contest for president again in 2027—whether or not they run together.

Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed made it clear he has deep respect for Obi and fully supports his return to the race under the Labour Party banner.

“Peter Obi is someone I hold in high regard,” he said. “If he decides to run again in 2027, the Labour Party welcomes him—whether I’m on the ticket with him or not. And if the ADC chooses to support a candidate from the South, that’s perfectly fine too.”

He emphasized that what Nigeria truly needs is leadership that brings real change—not chaos.

“We’re looking for leaders with competence, compassion, and the will to develop this country. People who keep their word—not those who promise progress and deliver problems,” he added.

Addressing Obi’s involvement in coalition discussions with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Baba-Ahmed dismissed the idea that it was against the party’s interest.

“This isn’t about disloyalty. It’s part of a growing alliance. That’s what coalitions are—parties, individuals, and groups finding common ground. I’ve attended those meetings myself, and Peter Obi is welcome to keep doing so,” he explained.

As for zoning in 2027, Baba-Ahmed believes the South should take the lead in producing the next president.
