The Supreme Court has made two significant rulings, declaring the payment of wages to the spouses of the President and Vice President as unconstitutional.

These landmark judgments stemmed from separate cases brought before the court by South Dayi Member of Parliament (MP) Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe Abronye.

The legal challenges arose following controversies over recommendations made by the presidential emolument committee regarding the payment of salaries and emoluments to the spouses of the President and Vice President.

In his lawsuit, Mr. Dafeamekpor sought a declaration from the court that the emolument committee exceeded its authority in recommending allowances for the First and Second Ladies.

Counsel for the plaintiffs, George Kodzo Adabadze, emphasized the importance of the court’s intervention in challenging the extension of salary allowances to the presidential spouses. He argued that the committee had overstepped its jurisdiction in making such recommendations.

Lawyer Esinam Kporku, representing lead counsel for Kwame Baffoe Abronye, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the reliance on all filed documents, particularly the plaintiff’s Statement of Case.

In a compelling address to the Chief Justice’s panel, Young Lawyer Essinam Kporku articulated the grounds for her client’s appeal to the apex court, receiving applause for her persuasive argumentation.
