The main opposition party in Nigeria has expressed its concern over the conduct of Saturday’s election, saying it was marred by “problems”.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) issued a statement criticizing the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec)
“To be clear, the election is inconclusive, and the Inec chairman cannot proceed unless the political parties are present to object to or accept the results at the national collation exercise.”
The opposition party urged election officials to declare Saturday’s election “inconclusive” and to hold new polls in areas where electronic voting machines were not used and where voting was disrupted by violence.
Both the PDP and the opposition Labour Party have claimed that the new electronic system, which was being used to accredit voters for the first time, lacked transparency.
The opposition parties’ complaints have been dismissed by Inec.
According to the most recent results, Mr. Tinubu received more than 44% of the votes cast. Atiku Abubakar, his main rival, has nearly 33% of the vote.
Labour’s Peter Obi, who is popular among younger voters in urban areas, has nearly 18% after defeating Mr. Tinubu in the largest city, Lagos.
