Premier League referee, Jarred Gillett, will be pioneering a significant change in football officiating tonight. He is set to wear a camera during the league match between Manchester United and Crystal Palace, marking the first instance of such technology being used in the Premier League.
Gillett’s use of the camera, known as a ‘RefCam,’ will provide viewers with a unique perspective on the game, capturing the action from the referee’s point of view. While the footage won’t be broadcast live, it will be utilized for a special program aimed at offering insights into Premier League officiating.
This innovative approach isn’t entirely new to football. Earlier in 2024, referee Daniel Schlager used a camera and microphone during a Bundesliga match, offering fans a glimpse into the refereeing process. Similarly, Premier League referee Rob Jones previously wore a camera during a 2023 Summer Series match between Chelsea and Brighton.
