Clubs breaking the league’s FFP rules can be fined or deducted points

The English Premier League referred Everton to an independent commission on Friday for an alleged violation of the division’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

“The Premier League confirms today, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, that it has referred an alleged violation of the League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules by Everton Football Club to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4. The alleged assessment period for which the Club is in breach is the period ending in Season 2021/22 “The Premier League announced the news in a statement.

The decision has to do with Everton’s spending for the 2021-22 season.

Although the proceedings will be “confidential and heard in private,” the final decision will be made public on the league’s website.

Everton stated that they are “disappointed” by the Premier League’s decision, but that they are “prepared to vigorously defend its position to the commission.”

Everton has reported losses totaling £371.8 million (or $388.3 million) over the last three years. The league, on the other hand, allows clubs to lose up to £105 million during that time.

Clubs that violate the financial rules may be fined or lose points.
