Temitope Ajayi, senior special assistant to President Bola Tinubu on media and publicity, has clarified recent claims about American tech giant Microsoft’s purported shutdown of its operations in Nigeria. Ajayi refuted media reports suggesting the closure of the Africa Development Centre (ADC) in Lagos, asserting their inaccuracy.

The ADC serves as Microsoft’s inaugural engineering hub in Africa, a significant establishment in the region.

Moreover, Ajayi addressed the remarks made by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, accusing him of sensationalism.

Contrary to the sensational claims, Ajayi emphasized that Microsoft is merely restructuring its operations, with only a limited number of roles affected.

In a statement posted on Thursday via his X handle, Ajayi stated, “Reports of Microsoft shutting down its Nigeria office are unfounded. The Africa Development Centre is a segment of Microsoft’s business in Nigeria. Contrary to misinformed media reports and @PeterObi’s hyperbolic statements, the Africa Development Centre is not closing its doors.

“Microsoft, like any large organization, is adjusting its internal roles, with only a small number of positions affected. Affected employees, less than 30 in number, will have the opportunity to apply for alternative roles within Microsoft—a standard procedure for the company.

“Those unable to secure new positions within the company or those seeking opportunities elsewhere will be offered assistance to transition out.

“The situation at Microsoft does not warrant the dramatic portrayal suggested by Peter Obi.”
