Kylian Mbappé Takes PSG to Court Over Alleged Pressure Tactics and Unpaid Wages
Kylian Mbappé, now with Real Madrid, is taking his former club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to court, accusing them of pressuring him to sign a new contract back in 2023 and sidelining him when he refused.
French outlet Le Parisien revealed that an investigation is underway following a complaint filed by the French national team captain on May 16. The case centers on how PSG handled the situation when Mbappé declined to renew his contract, leading to him being barred from training with the first team.
Two judges have been assigned to look into the matter. According to court documents, the 26-year-old is also seeking €55 million in unpaid wages and has described his experience at PSG as a form of moral harassment.
The term “lofting,” used in France to describe a player’s exclusion from team activities for disciplinary or strategic reasons, has been cited by Mbappé in his legal complaint.
Mbappé left PSG as a free agent last year after scoring a record 256 goals in seven seasons. He joined Real Madrid, while PSG went on to lift the Champions League trophy without him. His departure came amid tension, with some fans expressing their displeasure during his final appearances at Parc des Princes.
Reports suggest that despite PSG offering him the club’s richest-ever deal in 2022, Mbappé was left disillusioned when the club failed to follow through on promised player signings. Though the contract appeared to run until 2025, it included an opt-out clause for 2024 — a clause Mbappé activated in June 2023.
That decision set off a chain of events. PSG removed him from the squad’s preseason tour to Asia and made him train separately, aiming to sell him rather than lose him for free. Even a record €300 million offer from Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia didn’t change his mind.
Eventually, Mbappé was brought back into the team, but in April this year, his lawyers made it clear they planned to pursue legal action against PSG for how the situation was handled.
This legal case adds a dramatic twist to what has already been one of the most talked-about transfers in recent football history.
