Asaana: A Delightful Ghanaian Drink

Asaana, also known as Elewonyo in some regions of Ghana, is a beloved local beverage made from fermented corn and caramelized sugar. This refreshing drink is perfect for hot days and is a common sight at many Ghanaian celebrations, including weddings, naming ceremonies, and birthday parties.

Asaana Recipe from Telande World

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Fermented Corn
  • 1 ½ Cups Sugar
  • 5ml Milk
  • 2 Cups Ice
  • 1 ½ Liters Water

Preparation:

  1. Ferment the Corn: Soak the corn in 800ml of water and let it ferment for 3-5 days.
  2. Clean the Corn: Thoroughly wash and rinse the fermented corn.
  3. Cook the Corn: Place the washed corn in a saucepan with 700ml of water. Bring to a boil over medium heat for 30 minutes.
  4. Extract the Juice: Drain the juice from the cooked corn and set it aside.
  5. Caramelize the Sugar: In the same saucepan, pour the sugar and allow it to caramelize for about 10 minutes.
  6. Combine and Simmer: Add the corn juice to the caramelized sugar, stir well, and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely.
  7. Serve: Pour the cooled Asaana into a glass filled with ice and top with milk.
