Reinstated Edo Deputy Governor Claims Unofficial APC Membership
Philips Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, recently announced that he considers himself an unofficial member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Shaibu made this statement during an appearance on Arise TV’s morning show.
Shaibu expressed that his allegiance had shifted away from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), though he has not yet formally resigned from the party. He explained his support for the APC governorship candidate in Edo State, highlighting that “In the PDP now, everyone can support whoever they like. The constitution guarantees that you can support any candidate and belong to any political party.”
Further discussing the ongoing political crisis in the state, Shaibu mentioned that he had attempted to contact Governor Godwin Obaseki 101 times without receiving a response.
Accusations and Legal Battles
The Edo State Government has accused Shaibu of leading attacks on citizens and private property in Benin City. This follows a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that nullified Shaibu’s impeachment and reinstated him as Deputy Governor. The court also instructed the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to restore Shaibu’s full security details.
Despite the court’s ruling, the Edo State Government appealed the decision and applied for a Stay of Execution. Tensions escalated when Shaibu returned to Edo State, leading to clashes between his supporters and those of Governor Obaseki.
Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, issued a statement warning that Shaibu will face legal consequences for the alleged destruction in the state.
