In Kenya, 43 Facebook content moderators are suing the social media site’s parent company Meta for wrongful termination.

According to Reuters, the moderators claim they were fired by Sama, a Kenya-based firm contracted to moderate Facebook content, for organizing a union.

They also claim that after Facebook switched contractors, they were barred from applying for the same positions at another outsourcing firm, Majorel.

According to Foxglove, a technology rights group that is supporting the lawsuit, Sama, the outsourcing firm that has run the office since 2019, informed 260 content moderators working at Facebook’s moderation hub in Nairobi that they would be laid off in January.

“The redundancy being undertaken is unlawful because no genuine or justifiable reason for the redundancy was given,” the moderators wrote in their court petition.

Meta has yet to respond to the situation.

Meta filed an appeal in Kenya last month, challenging a ruling that said it could be sued despite having no official presence in the East African country.
