Senegal’s president has rejected claims that seeking a controversial third mandate would be unconstitutional.
Macky Sall’s remarks in an interview with the French magazine L’Express are likely to aggravate an already tense political situation.
Senegal’s constitution was amended in 2016 to reduce the presidential term from seven to five years.

It states that no one can serve more than two consecutive terms, which the opposition claims preclude Mr. Sall from running in the election next year.
Critics accuse Mr. Sall’s government of using the courts to marginalize opposition politician Ousmane Sonko.
Mr. Sonko is currently facing two court cases that could jeopardize his election eligibility.
