Moussa Diop, a university student residing in the village, shared his heart-wrenching story. He revealed that he had three male cousins and a teenage nephew on the ill-fated boat that departed in secrecy last month. Shockingly, his own sister was unaware that her son had embarked on the perilous journey, and her distress since his disappearance has been immeasurable.
The tragic news of their voyage reached the family through a WhatsApp video sent by one of the surviving cousins from Sal. The message confirmed that while three had survived and were receiving medical care, one of the younger cousins had tragically lost their life. For Mr. Diop and others, the overwhelming mix of sorrow for the lost ones and relief for those who survived has given way to an outpouring of frustration.
In the aftermath of this devastating incident, the town of Fass Boye saw expressions of anger manifesting. Vehicles and boats were vandalized, and the mayor’s house was set ablaze in the heat of the moment.
Amid this unrest, the younger generation is voicing their grievances, blaming the lack of opportunities and calling on authorities to take substantial actions to uplift and support their prospects.
